What an engaging class, talking about sound and the mechanisms of the ears that help us hear so much information! Week 3: Earth Science and Space.March 9th, 2019.
A handy trick to remember the order of the plants in the Milky Way is: My Very Excited Mother Just Served Us Noodles. Or substitute any food at the end. Whatever works. Week 8: Static Electricity.April 20th, 2019.
This class, we introduced basic physics concepts of atomic particles, electric forces, and why things work the way they do. Don't get shocked by those electrons! Homework: Finish the Common Core Math packet. Lecture Homework is in the Google Drive.
Week 6: The Water Cycle.March 30th, 2019.
This class, we discussed the parts of the water cycle and drew the process, as well as learning about daily occurrences that are all reminders of different sections of the cycle. Week 4: The Scientific Method.March 16th, 2019.
We had a great time learning about and coming up with real-world examples of the scientific method. As kids start having more practical science classes at school, I hope that they find these steps to be very useful and familiar. Homework: Finish the Common Core Math packet. Week 2: Data & Graphs Pt. 2.March 2nd, 2019.
Today in class, we learned about line graphs and how they are similar and different to our old friends from last semester, the bar graph. We also started working on Common Core mathematics goals with rounding, articulating larger numbers in the hundred thousands / millions, and ordering from smallest to largest. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Best of wishes for this new chapter of learning and classroom fun. Maps and geography is an entertaining topic to learn. Spatial reasoning skills are crucial! Our final exam is January 19th. Please remind students to study and do their best work! I will introduce our final marketing project soon. Critical reading is a very time-consuming skill and requires patience. If your child is frustrated by the work or unwilling to spend time, please do your best to find challenging articles that are interesting to the student and slowly increase the scope of article topics. Week 6: 10/20 Negative Numbers.October 20th, 2018
Negative numbers are definitely challenging topics for young students to understand, but with practice comes perfection! Learning it sooner is better than later. Week 4: 10/6 Parts of Speech.October 6th, 2018
Welcome to the fall month! Stay warm. Today we took our regularly scheduled quiz and learned about the parts of speech, as well as some weird words that don't seem to stick to just one category! Homework: Complete pages 24-27 of the yellow book. Math and lecture homework are in the Google drive. Turn in any floating forms! Prefixes and suffixes next week! Week 2: 9/22 CogAT Overview.September 22nd, 2018
Welcome new students! Please check your emails for Google Drive links sent out soon today. Print out your child's math homework and bring it to class next week. Those of us without diagnostic scores make it hard for me to judge mathematics ability! Today we went over CogAT requirements, tips/tricks, and multiplication. Homework: Read through pages 4-13 in Gifted and Talented CogAT Test Prep Gifted Games with students and complete problems on pages 14-17. Math homework is in the Google Drive. Turn in the syllabus and class funds donation forms next week. Get prepared for data analysis next week!

Week 12: States of Matter.December 15th, 2018
I am so excited to start getting into science! My favorite classes have always been about observing the world around me in biology, physics, or chemistry, so this simple lesson was very engaging. We talked about making inferences this week. Although strange to teach, this skill is universally applicable to all subjects in class and can enhance any lucky guesser's performance :) Homework: Complete pages 49-53 of the yellow book. Week 7: 10/27 Paper Folding.October 27th, 2018
Paper folding is always a rather magical and challenging experience for students. I hope that my demonstrations are not only going to motivate kids to try models of their own and practice, but also help them in understanding the patterns. I hope for classes to be quick and smooth so that the kids can have fun afterward with one another! When classes take longer, no one is happy :( Homework: Complete pages 32 - 37 of the yellow book. Week 5: 10/13 Prefixes and Suffixes.October 13th, 2018
Prefixes and Suffixes take a lot of practice! See if your students can think of regular words that might have these in them. I find it really interesting myself. I will not be present next week.
